TABLOIDSINARTANI.COM, Jakarta – The millennial generation in America has turned out to be a potential and promising export market for ornamental plants. Their hobby of collecting ornamental plants has made this beauty export market start to stretch in the last 3 years.

“According to a survey by the National Gardening Association, in 2015 there were 6 million Americans who had just started to pursue gardening (landscape), it turns out that most or 5 million of them are millennials. Then in 2016 -2019 they spent on ornamental plants reaching USD 1.7 billion,” said ornamental plant exporter, Redi Fajar Kurniawan during a webinar held by the Agricultural Quarantine Technical and Method Testing Center (BUTTMKP) of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantan) to support program implementation. GraTiEx and Agricultural Quarantine Application Test.

What are house plants? Redi said, house plants are indoor plants because they are placed indoors, including the living room and bedroom. “Small size and can fit into the pot,” he said.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many millennials are working from home (Work From Home) so they want something they can care for and make good friends with animals and plants. ‘If it’s a dog or a cat, it’s expensive to leave them on vacation. It’s different from plants that can be more flexible,” he added.

Generally, USA millennials also live in apartments which of course have limited space. Social media trends like Instagram (IG) which are loved by millennials are also very influential, when these beautiful plants support them in showing their best on IG.

Redi said, the types of house plants that are of interest and have the potential to be exported from Indonesia also vary, such as araceae, aroid, anthurium to Philodendron which are actually not native Indonesian plants but have been around for hundreds of years.
